The New Google?

The Buzz

Over the past few months the Google search engine has been experimenting with an Instant Search feature that automatically suggests search results based on keywords that are entered in by a user.

What Google Says

“Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type.”

Top 3 Things to Know

The changes with how Google displays its search results are having the following affects on visitors that use the search engine:

  1. The time it takes for a user to identify and select a website from the search results has decreased by 2 to 5 seconds.
  1. The way that Google ranks websites organically appears to have remained the same.
  1. Research from Google has shown that users are clicking on the top three to five listings in a search result because they are perceived to be the most relevant.
